I posted an image the other day on an Art/Graphics forum which was a “scribble” I did some time ago as a result of a visit to India and it seemed to generate quite a bit of interest.

It’s always been the case though I suppose that sketches, scribbles and jottings of artists and photographers alike, have always had a position of interest for collectors, fellow artists, historians and all sorts of people.  And doubly nice that someone should like what was a quick sketch or scribble of my own.

When I used to dabble of course I was always scribbling little sketches, notes and jottings of points of interest and highlights etc. mostly of views and subjects that I would maybe get round to painting.
Then when painting became out reach, I fell back on photography as the main means of capturing the moment, the feeel and the detail of the scene. Nowhere near the quality of the “live” sketch however, but that, plus memory now is the only alternative and what with the amazing computer programmes today, it’s possible to do a pretty reasonable job of art impression nevertheless.

“This one above I have since coloured in what may appear an odd colour set, but the whole temple drawing business has sort of got me going – with all sorts of ideas – just because these building are so fantastic to me anyway – and here it is  below” -

Coloured scribble

Coloured scribble

I have also done this temple in a true “fantasy” style with somewhat way out colouring just for fun.  In fact I’ve done quite a few since and having fun I must admit.  I’ll post one before the end of this blog entry if I can lay my hands on one.

So when more photographer than artist every so often health permitting I would,  and still try from time to time  “do a scribble”  with a nice Art flexi-nib pen with large black Indian ink reservoir built in, this is an ideal medium to use.  The scribble is then used as an additional aid to memory, when I come to produce my computer generated Art pictures.
Very occasionally the scribble is a bit like my old days and reasonably good, enough in fact to stand alone as a picture in it’s own right.  And I love it when that happens – makes me feel really good as no matter how good the computer photo/art is, there’s nothing quite like the real deal!  Also if it IS a good one then a little watercolour wash with a grey monochrome can set it off to best advantage and perhaps elevates the scribble to another artform.

Every so often though I find these drawings and decide that maybe they’re worth resurrecting in their own right.  So now I’m scanning them into the PC and trying out some fantasy stuff on them ( I get these urges every so often!) and some of them are really quite smart, especially buildings for some reason.

OK – I said I’d find another image – this is another temple and here I’ve gone very artful, colourful and fanciful.  With the advent of some serious colouration the scribble has maybe reached the heights of a new Art form !

Now india was an ideal place for scribbling as we visited so many Temples and wonderful building structures that my architectural interests were buzzing.  Difficult to stop myself getting the jotter and pen out and quickly having a go.
And this is the point of course – “quickly” drawn is the key and why it’s a “scribble” I suppose as it is “of the moment” both visually and emotionally – that is – how you “feel” the scene at that particular point in time.

This is probably why I call it the “Art of Scribble”, because to my mind that’s exactly what it is – Art – and perhaps at it’s instant best.
