This is Lamayuru Gompa the oldest monastery in Ladakh (10th Century) – in northwest India almost on the borders with Tibet and around 3500m above sea level. Visited this fascinating place some years ago and took quite a few photographs of the monastery and the surrounding area.

This particular image is a water-colour style illustration from a photograph taken at the time and produced here as virtual framed art. I had originally called it “Fortress” as that’s actually what I thought it was on first seeing it.
Quite an amazing and unexpected spectacle too – built high on a rocky outcrop and with the towering hills backdrop overlooking the collection of buildings and towers of the monastery.
One of those places you don’t forget.
