Waterfront of Venice

A watercolor style painting to a canvas background taken from an original color photograph and using the minimum of coloration to give animation and life to the finished result.

The scene is of the Riva degli Schiavoni, part of the waterfront of Venice, Italy with the architecture of the city showing in the background as the subject of the work.

I used the couple in the foreground to lead you into the picture and the lamp-post at the left to assist in the framing  of the focal point.

I’m told that usually this area is crowed with stands and sellers but maybe as this was a Saturday perhaps not a trading day -  who knows.  Further along there were a few just setting up for the day – so perhaps too early for them.

I also show next the original photograph from which was used as the basis for this work.

Note the photograph is originally a much wider perspective and not requiring this I closed in as it were on the particular area of interest to me.  I framed it with the lampost on the left and the buildings on the right – so that the focus would be drawn to the architecture of the buildings.

Riva degli Schiavoni

One of a series of paintings and sketches I managed when recently in Venice.  A special gallery of these can be seen at www.johnartstudio.com until the end of December 2010 only – when the web site unfortunately will be closing down.  This owing to health issues I find it too difficult to update it as I would like.

This blog site however hopefully will remain and will be updated as and when I can.
