Baltic pavilion

This was a wonderful beach pavilion I spotted whilst traveling on the north Baltic coast.  Where? – Usedom an old favorite of the Kings of Pomerania.

Down a steep series of steps from the raised shore, across the rather excellent beach and into what I’m sure is a sort of Victorian replica of a beach pavilion. Done out in the style of the time it is a wonderful structure, on stilts and a magnet for tourists. Further off into the sea stretches another pier which gives an odd dimension to the whole scene which was partly what attracted me to seeing a painting in the overall view.

Partly impressionist of course which is just me these days I’ve kept it quite minimalist by just picking out the main colors, the jackets of the people going down the steps as they lead the viewer towards the building and the roof tile colors of the pavilion itself.

The wooden walkways too attracted my attention and I used a brown/sepia coloration of these again to pull the eye outwards to the pavilion at the edge of the sea.  I used a sea impression on the beach – the only sand color used just under the start of the walkway – to give the effect that the sea does come in close to the shore on the tide giving a quite different look to the scene every few hours.

A fascinating place indeed and an area not much frequented by the world tourist, but well known to the German and Polish holiday folks closer to the Baltic – the next painted image is a view in the opposite direction – into the town itself.  This is being reconstructed in the style that it was once was before the disappearance of the German Democratic demarcation/boundaries that affected Pomerania.

Baltic holiday town

Once again making it as it used to be – the holiday haunt of Royalty.  I have to say it’s looking pretty good. It was great fun painting these as the architecture of the buildings has that Hanseatic look which is quite different to what I’m perhaps familiar with and very pleasing to the eye they are too.

Worth a trip maybe . . . . .
