Paddling along a tributary of the Rio Negra in the Amazon, Brazil in the quiet evening as the sun goes down.  A stillness only broken only by the flap, flap wing beats of river birds as they feed along the banks of a cooling river after the heat of the day.

On the river

Used heavy brushed colors here picking up the reflections of the water from the flame sky – a fleeting moment I suppose as the light darkened and the colors all to soon disappeared into what became the deep blackness of the Negro.  I tried here to give the impression of the scene as a memory, the ripples of greens and blues flecked with orange reds of the sunset, the blue of the boatman darkening further then losing his silhouette as we mad our way back up river.

Used quite a few layers on this image before managing to produce the effect I wanted, not wishing to make it too intense and impressionistic this time and still leave a pictorial remnant like a fading memory.  I suppose movement was one aspect I wanted to create.  That this scene was only temporary and was changing, fleeting almost as soon as I started to paint it to the screen.

Personally I’m quietly pleased with it.  Hope anyone out there likes it too . . . . . . . .
