A combination of filters produced this etching style image – from an old B&W newspaper photograph I wanted much more than a sepia tint. I wanted to replicate that old print, old color etching look but also wanted this finished effect to be the starting point or base for an “old painting” look.  Here are both -

Princes Street, Edinburgh - color Print

The image above is my  old color etching look on paper interpretation.  Now using this as the base I further managed alternative effects and with additional color brushwork to produce a traditional oil style heavy “Old Masters” painting on conventional canvas.

"Old Masters" style painting - Edinburgh 1890's.

On the painting I have accentuated only some of the etching detail, using block color in parts and preferring to keep some outline highlights to give pictorial definition to the finished work.  The overall color I kept muted and tried to give a hint of that old painting above the fireplace look, complete with smoke and years of grime, so the finished piece has a fair amount of browning within it.

Great fun to do this one and I have almost perfected a new technique for this manipulation and whilst it doesn’t work for all images, this particular city scene and perhaps city-scapes in general seem to work quite well using it – and I will be posting another of Edinburgh in the near future.
