Portrait study in virtual pencil from a small color photograph can often achieve good results. This one is from an old and quite small photograph and was actually a the result of a small wager from a friend. We both used to draw portraits of friends and so on and even in business it was fun at exhibitions sometimes, but he wondered if I could manage one using the computer only. This is the result.
Had some fun with this and took a bit of time over it in the end to attempt to achieve the sort of result I wanted. A slight departure from my old real drawing when being influenced so heavily at the time by Impressionist and Expressionist painters and movements, it is a little realist for those who remember my old stuff. But I’m pretty pleased with the finished piece as it does portray a decent and solid “sketch” style and even has some character to it. Not often too easy to manage on computer.
I also thought I could probably manage an oil painting style image just for fun, again using only computer manipulation on the same picture and this is the result of the exercise shown below.
I sometimes think that some of my work today should be redefined as “enhanced” art, rather than “virtual” depending on the actual process used.
Generally there are a few different forms using computer, from using a drawing tablet and physically drawing with a pointer with virtual brushes or to photo manipulation where you alter the image using various filters and effects generated by software such as Photoshop for example (though I personally have never used it) or as in many of my images often scanned original drawings or paintings which are then “enhanced” using computer software – in other words, real art being manipulated which gives entirely different results.
I have to admit however on occasion having posted real art work on this blog and rather pleased to see that these particular works fit right in with what I’m trying to achieve today – so in one respect I’ve managed more often than not (not always) to replicate my art and created, yes created something new – that I call as the blog title says – Computer Art & Me.
